Measure the stump at ground level
For grinding, the useful measurement is generally the widest part of the stump near the work area—not the former tree diameter measured several feet above the ground. Measure across the stump and note unusually wide root flare.
Take two stump photos
Take one close photo showing the stump and scale, then step back and take a second photo showing the surrounding lawn, fence, driveway, structures and other obstacles.
Measure access too
If the stump is in a backyard or side yard, measure the narrowest gate or passage. A 36-inch gate does not guarantee 36 inches of usable clearance if hinges, posts or nearby equipment reduce the opening.
